Special Sections

Client: TIME Magazine / American Plastics Council
Objective:
The American Plastics Council's objective in sponsoring this series of single page advertorials in TIME magazine was to help change negative impressions and to enlighten consumers about the important role of plastics in our daily lives. Titled Exploring the Possibilities, these five advertorials reminded readers of the many products that plastics make possible that we take for granted each day. Each of the five pages focused on a specific use of plastics: home construction, medicine, technology, space exploration and the automobile.

Client: Fortune
Objective:
Fortune Magazine, in association with the New York Road Runners Club, sponsored this 5K run in New York's Central Park—the first annual 5K Fight Against Prostate Cancer—aimed at raising needed funds for prostate cancer research and education. I was hired to write two special sections: the first to announce the event to Fortune's subscribers and inform them how to take part; and this five page section which appeared after the event and reported the day's highlights in detail. Both provided a positive, upbeat environment for the section's advertisers.

Client: Wall Street Journal
Objective:
This full page special section, entitled "Your Job and Your Health," appeared in the Wall Street Journal during Men's Health Week, a week devoted to men's issues each June. Sponsored by Men's Warehouse, its aim was to educate the Journal's 4 million+ readers to the health concerns - the added stress, the lack of privacy, the extended workday, etc. - that result from the very technology designed to make our work life easier. My assignment was to research the topic, interview experts in the field, and theme and write the section - all within a relatively short time frame.

Client: Wall Street Journal
Objective:
This two-page center spread in the Personal Journal section of the Wall Street Journal was devoted to a discussion of the major prostate diseases, prostatitis, BPH and prostate cancer. Sponsored by Flomax, a drug designed to relieve the painful symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate, this section had two goals: to educate men to the symptoms of prostate disease, and to emphasize the need for an annual physical exam for all men over fifty. My job involved researching the topic, interviewing a number of doctors and urologists and writing this three thousand word section.
